چکیده
This paper presents an integrated view of the effects of context upon lexical access and lexical integration during sentence comprehension. The review incorporates evidence from both standard psycholinguistic and neuro-cognitive approaches. Along with this integrated overview, new hemispherespecific processing evidence concerning context and lexical processing is presented. The evidence is taken to support a "modes of processing" perspective in the examination of sentence comprehension.

Lexical Processing during Sentence Comprehension: Effects of Higher Order Constraints and Implications for Representation
A fundamental problem in language comprehension is to obtain an accurate characterization of lexical processing and of the influence of contextual information upon that processing. This paper will examine evidence concerning the effects of so-called 'higher-order' constraints upon the various stages of lexical processing and will outline a model of the representation and processing of lexical m...
متن کاملConceptual combination during sentence comprehension: evidence for compositional processes.
This experiment examined the time course of integration of modifier-noun (conceptual) combinations during auditory sentence comprehension using cross-modal lexical priming. The study revealed that during ongoing comprehension, there is initial activation of features of the noun prior to activation of (emergent) features of the entire conceptual combination. These results support compositionalit...
متن کاملSemantic facilitation across sensory modalities in the processing of individual words and sentences.
The effect of semantic priming upon lexical decisions made for words in isolation (Experiment 1) and during sentence comprehension (Experiment 2) was investigated using a crossmodal lexical decision task. In Experiment 1, subjects made lexical decisions to both auditory and visual stimuli. Processing auditorily presented words facilitated subsequent lexical decisions on semantically related vis...
متن کاملThe on-line study of sentence comprehension: an examination of dual task paradigms.
This paper presents three studies which examine the susceptibility of sentence comprehension to intrusion by extra-sentential probe words in two on-line dual-task techniques commonly used to study sentence processing: the cross-modal lexical priming paradigm and the unimodal all-visual lexical priming paradigm. It provides both a general review and a direct empirical examination of the effects ...
متن کاملExamination of Sentence Processing with Continuous vs. Interrupted Presentation Paradigms
This paper presents three studies which examine the susceptibility of sentence processing to intrusion by extra-sentential target words in two on-line dual-task techniques commonly used to study sentence processing: the cross-modal continuous-sentence (CMCS) paradigm and the unimodal visual sentenceinterruption (UVSI) paradigm. It provides a direct empirical examination of issues raised by McKo...
